Does anal sex have any health risks?
Some young adults simply use it for contraception in the absence of condoms.
Anal intercourse is a form of sexual activity that involves inserting the penis in the anus.
The anus is full of nerve ending, this makes it sensitive to stimulation which people enjoy.
While quite a lot of couple regard it to be safe and fun, the practice is known to pose some health risks.
Anal sex is regarded as one of the riskiest forms of sexual activity for the following reasons.
a). Transmission of STD’s
Penetration causes tissue tear inside the anus; the anus does not have natural lubrication the vagina has.
Such tissue tears lead to viruses and bacteria entering the bloodstream.
Sexually transmitted diseases especially HIV is easily transmitted through this medium.
Research indicates anal sex is over 30 times riskier than vaginal sex. The use of lubricants might reduce tear, but doesn’t eliminate it.
b) Weakening of the anal sphincter
The structure of the anus is surrounded by rings of muscles called the anal sphincter. The function of the anal sphincter is to hold feces and tighten after we defecate.
Repetitive anal sex usually leads to weakening of the anal sphincter, this makes it difficult to hold feces.
c) Urinary tract infection
There is still a risk of infection when both partners are free of sexually transmitted diseases.
This is because the anus is full of bacteria. The risk of contracting vaginal and urinary tract infection is especially high in couples who practice vaginal sex after anal sex.
While serious injury from anal sex is rare, it occurs. Such injuries are caused a big tear, hemorrhoid or a perforation of the colon.
Such serious injuries are emergencies that may involve admission and surgery.
