Question Asked:

"Good morning Dr. I missed my period for two months and it finally came out on Monday, two days ago. Monday was a spot and then Tuesday, I had very heavy flow, I used six always pad (the one for heavy flow), then throughout the night I didn't sleep because I woke up two times to change cos I got stained. Even as I was bathing, I was dripping. This kind of heavy flow hasn't happened to me before cos four years ago when I missed my period for two months, when it finally came out, it was a light flow for just two days. So should I be worried? I'm a student and it's kind of impairing my normal activity. I have taken ibuprofen 400mg twice daily for the abdominal pain. Thanks "

Good morning, Sorry about this. What you have is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding which is more of a hormonal problem. A delay in your menses for that long can warrant a heavy flow that you are experiencing now. Ibuprofen can make it worse, so I want you to stop using ibuprofen. Take paracetamol either. You should take haematinics e.g MIM capsule or fersolate tablet and folic acid. This will help replenish the blood you are loosing. I'm optimistic it will subside.

Okay, thank you Dr idris. I will stop using ibuprofen. Pls what will happen if I don't take the haematinics apart from having anaemia. If I don't take it, can I miss my period again?

Haematinics as you have rightly said is to prevent a complication which is anaemia. It has no influence on your cycle or your flow. So whether you will miss your period again or not is determined by the haematinics but some complex factors which is beyond the scope of this platform. You however need the help of a gynaecologist in this case. You can do an abdominopelvic ultrasound and go with the report.

Okay, I'm sure you meant to say that it's not determined by the haematinics. I will observe myself for three more days to know if there will be a next step. Thank you.

Yes... it's not determined ... I meant to say. Considering your age too, a fibroid mass can also be a cause. A scan should pick it if you have one. Take care

Good afternoon Dr idris. Just want to give you a feedback. I feel better and the flow stopped this morning. You were right saying that the unusual heavy flow could have been due to not seeing my period for two months. Thanks and God bless you. Cheers.

That's good news. God bless you too.

Good morning Dr. Hope you are fine. Pls I'm experiencing this pain on the left side of chest. Internal pain. It started three days ago. I woke up with the pain and as I'm talking to you, it's like it's gradually spreading cos I'm now having more pain at the back, on the same left side. The pain is severe when I rise up from my bed or bend down. I also feel a mild pain at the front as I breathe but I feel it worse at the back. I'm really worried. Please what could be the problem.

Good morning, I will like to know a few things; - are you coughing? - have you had this type of pain before now?

I am not coughing and I have not had this type of pain before. Though in December, I was very ill, I ate pork for the first time and after 4 days, I fell Ill with fever, weakness of the body, body pain, serious cough that progressed to coughing out green sputum once and subsequently traces of blood on the sputum and my nose was also bleeding-as in, I had catarrh too, yellow mucus but with blood too. So I was treated for malaria with injection, I wasn't given antibiotic so on my own, I want to buy azithromycin which I took for 3days. I got better but it was gradual, so I didn't take any other medication, so after like two weeks, the bleeding stopped, the coughing stopped too until these few days ago that I woke up with pain. I slept without clothes for the first time while the fan was on, so I woke up with the pain. That's the little history I can give. So since then, the pain keeps increasing and I feel it more when I take a deep breath

Sorry about the pain once again. Just description fits a chest infection. Sometimes it happens without a cough. You will benefit from a chest examination and probably a chest xray. I wouldn't be able to do any of these here. You will need to see a doctor for help. Take care

Okay, thank you. What caused the chest infection. Also if left untreated, what will happen?
    Dr. Idris Q answered:

For now it will be difficult to say what caused it. I can't even make a diagnosis yet without examining you. I'm only telling you my suspicion from what you told me. It won't be proper to offer an advice when I'm not even sure yet

Okay, good morning . I will go for the chest x-ray. Pls can you tell me what this result says. Have attached a picture. Pls what does blood OT mean? Thanks
    Dr. Idris Q answered:

Good morning, How was your night? The some of the parameters you tested for are within normal limit. In the first image you attached, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a bit on the high side. This result should however be interpreted with caution because a lot of factors are put into consideration when interpreting the ESR result. Even though you have the right to know about your health, some of these details are better not discussed to avoid ambiguity. The result also shows you have malaria parasites in your blood. You can take an antimalarial drug for that. The parameters in the second picture are within normal limit. I will still advise you see a doctor before going for the chest xray. Take care

Good afternoon Dr idris. I intend seeing a doctor, that test was done last year December. I have already treated for malaria parasite. I just want to know about the esr. , don't worry about it being ambiguous. I will understand.

Good afternoon, I'm afraid you won't. :) So information are better communicated physically. This is not a good medium to solve this kind of ambiguity. Trust me.
