Question Asked:

"good evening, been a while, been having visible mucus in stool on and off for 2 years now, sometimes it comes like diarrhea with small amount of stool with same quantity of mucus and lasts for few days then disappears for sometimes, now my stool is most times pastry like 2cm in diameter, sometimes it's a little more than 2cm and sometimes a little less, I also was diagnosed with ulcer recently, which calms down after eating, sometimes I have slight pain and discomfort even after food, are these normal or I should have cause for concern? I also noticed I fart late evenings and nights especially when I need to do a toilet visit. complained to my doctor who said I should do an abdominal scan which was done today and the result came out very fine with no obstructions, the doctor I saw afterwards said I might have to do colonoscopy because of the mucus that is on and off, pls advise"

But I did a stool test last week and they said everything is ok. no blood,no bacteria infection. my doctor friend who reside in Canada said no cause for worry. I am confused self

well I wasn't expecting a stool test to be positive because it didn't sound infective. when people above 40years experience change in bowel habit like you are doing now the first thing is to ensure it is not due to a bowel cancer. you'll need a colonoscopy and CT scan to exclude this and get peace of mind. just see a surgeon ok.

high plant protein meals can give you soft stool.the response is however, individualised. not everyone reacts same way to beans, akara or moi moi.

of late I realised I fart especially at night, I changed my lifestyle to fruit veggies like spinach, celery, tumeric, broccolli etc and realised I do 4-5 toilet visits as against my regular average of 3 times a day, could this be the reason?

I can't see anything to be particularly worried about. you change in diet can account for the change. gradually it will reduce back to what is normal for you. take care
