An ovarian cyst is a fluid collection in the ovary. This fluid is contained in a sac. Various reasons in relation to why it develops have been given none of which is conclusive for now. All that is know is that it develops and must be taken care off if it's becoming a disturbance. You have 2 ovaries, one on both sides, and if a cyst develops in one it can lead to pain on the affected side just as you have complained. Other things can also be responsible, that's why you need to do a scan to be sure.
Operation is not indicated in all cases of ovarian cyst. The decision to operate will be taken by your gynaecologist after considering factors such as size, it's effect on your daily activities, infection or likelihood of torsion. So leave this your Doctor
